Controlling Your Concentration
重点词汇和词组 Span Fluctuate Infrequent Distraction Focal point Remedy Retention Fall apart
阅读理解1 一、内容 阅读理解1 考察形式:选择 数量:15个
阅读必备的素质: 1.
Alcohol affects the brain; and its immediate effects are more marked on those who are not used to the drug than on regular drinkers. It is not a stimulant but a depressant, which adversely affects concentration, removes inhabitations, and increases the risk of accidents. Under the influence of alcohol people are less able to exercise self-control and may say and do things that they afterwards regret-----perhaps for the rest of their lives. For example, a girl who does not wish to have a baby may be made pregnant by a man whom she would not have chosen as the farther of her child; and a man may make pregnant a woman whom he would not have chosen as the mother of his child. Some other forms of drug taking, like drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco, are part of group behavior. Such drug taking is encouraged by those who are already addicted to the drug, and by those who profit by making and selling the drug. I mean one who starts taking a drug may soon become addicted to it. As with all bad habits, it is better not to start drug taking than to suffer the physical and emotional harm caused by the drug and to have the problem of trying to break the addiction. It is best, therefore, to refuse the drugs that is offered. Apart from other considerations, drugs that come from unreliable sources (because their manufacturer and distribution is against the law.) and not available in carefully measured and doses and their purity are not guaranteed. Their effects are unpredictable and they may well be dangerous. If such drugs are offered by so-called friends you wouldn’t be well advised to find new friends, who share your values, and to continue being yourself. 21. Regular drinkers of alcohol are those who_______
- are not used to the drug
- many get immediate effects from the drink
- sufferer a lot from the drink
- drink the drug very often
D 这里作者把酒精比作drug。它及时的影响对那些不适应这种“毒药”的人远比经常饮酒的人要显著。

Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. Everybody gets sick. Disease and injury make us suffer throughout our lives until, finally, some attack on the body brings our existence to an end. Fortunately, most of us in modern industrialized societies can take relatively good health for granted most of the time. In fact, we tend to fully realize the importance of good health only when we or those close to us become seriously ill. At such times we keenly appreciate the ancient truth that health is our most precious asset, one for which we might readily give up such rewards as power, wealth, or fame(荣誉). Because ill health is a universal problem, affecting both the individual and society, the human response to sickness in always socially organized. No society leaves the responsibility for maintaining health and treating ill health entirely to the individual. Each society develops its own concepts of health and sickness and authorizes certain people to decide who is sick and how the sick should be treated. Around this focus there arises, over time, a number of standard, values, groups, statuses, and roles: in other words, an institution(体系,机构). To the sociologist(社会学家), then, medicine is the institution concerned with the maintenance of health and the treatment of disease. In the simple pre-industrial societies, medicine is usually an aspect of religion. The social arrangements for dealing with sickness are very elementary, often involving only two roles: the sick and the healer(治疗者). The later is typically also the priest(牧师), who relies primarily on religious ceremonies, both to identify and to treat disease: for example, bones may be thrown to establish a cause, songs may be used to bring about a cure. In modern industrialized societies, on the other hand, the institution has become highly complicated and specialized, including dozens of roles such as those of brain surgeon, druggist, hospital administrator, linked with organizations such as nursing houses, insurance companies, and medical schools. Medicine, in fact, has become the subject of intense sociological interest precisely because it is now one of the most pervasive and costly institutions of modern society.

According to Paragraph 3, which of the following is NOT true? A、In the past, bones might be used to decide why people fell ill B、In pre-industrial societies priests sometimes treated patients by singing C、Modern medicine is so complicated that sociology no longer has a place in it. D、there were only two roles in an elementary medical system, the patient and the one who tried to cure them. 30. The author of this passage is mainly concerned with ______. A、sociological aspects in medicine B、medical treatment of diseases C、the development of medical science D、the role of religion in medicine 26.B 判断题。 30.A 主旨题。纵观全文,作者用很大的篇幅,从社会学方面讨论了对待药的看法。
Passage three Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage
Let’s look at another example of how people’s communication patterns differ: the way people conserve. Some foreigners have observed that when Americans carry on a conversation, it seems as if they are having a Ping-Pong game. One person has the ball and then hits it to the other side of the table. The other player hits the ball back and the game continues. If one person doesn’t return the ball, then the conversation stops. Each part of the conversation follows this pattern: the greeting and the opening, the discussion of a topic, and the closing and farewell. If either person talks too much, the other may become impatient and feel that he is dominating the conversation. Similarly, if one person doesn’t say enough or ask enough questions to keep the conversation going, the conversation stops. Many North Americans are impatient with culturally different conversation styles simply because the styles are unfamiliar. For example, to many North Americans, it seems that some Latin Americans dominate conversations, or hold the ball too long. Speaking of her co-workers from several Latin American countries, one North Americans woman said,” I just find it difficult to cut in. they seem to take such a long time to express themselves. They give you a lot of unnecessary details.” when she talked with them, she became tense, because she found it so hard to participate. yet she also noted that when they talked to each other, nobody seemed uncomfortable or left out. The North American woman didn’t know how to interrupt the Latin American conversations because North American ways of listening and breaking in are very different. She had been taught to listen politely until the other person had finished talking. (once again, there are gender(性别)difference; it has been observed that men tend to interrupt women more than women interrupt men.)when the North American woman did what was “natural” or “normal” for her(i. e., listen politely without interrupting), she was not comfortable in the conversation with the Latin Americans. The result was that she became more passive in her conversations with her co-workers. The differences between the unspoken rules of conversation of each cultural group interfered with their on-the-job relationship.
31. When North Americans converse together, each one of the group is supposed to _______. A. participate in the talk B. play Ping-Pang games C. interrupt the speaker D. dominate the conversation 31.A 细节题。第一段第二行表示:北美人谈话像打乒乓球,任何一方停止谈话,谈话就中止了。所以选择A
32. when North Americans converse with the Latin Americans, the North Americans would feel _______. A. involved B. left out C. comfortable D. relaxed 32. B 细节题。第二段第五行表示:拉丁美洲人“持球时间长”,北美人很难加入谈话中。故选B
33. To the North Americans, the Latin Americans are __________. A. polite B. communicative C. dominant D. familiar 33. C 细节题。第二段第三行表明拉丁美洲人爱控制谈话。

B. different conversational styles may affect people’s relationships C. men are more talkative than women D. North Americans’ conversational habits are better than those of Latin Americans’ 34. B 主旨理解题。文章最后一句话表明不同谈话方式影响两者关系。 35. The best title for this passage is ________. A. Different Conversation Styles B. Different Conversation Topics C. Different Conversation Processes D. Different Conversation Effects 35.A 主旨理解题。每段第一句可以看出全篇都在讨论不同谈话风格。 Soccer it is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been a few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way--- was it through training and practice, or are great players “born, not made”? First, these players come from places that have had famous stars in the past---players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup---three from south America and three from Western Europe. There has never been a great national team---or a really great player---from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four. Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood---a poor, crowded area where a boy’s dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a “ball” made of rags. And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall in the slums of Belfast. All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn’t explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.
21. According to the author, which of the following statement is true?
- Soccer is popular all over the world, but truly great players are rare.
- Millions of people all over the world are playing soccer, but only six countries have ever had famous stars.
- Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but only six countries from South America and Western Europe have ever had great national teams.
- All over the world soccer is one of the most popular games, but it seems least popular in North America or Asia.
22. The word “tricks” at the end of Para.2 is closest in meaning to ______. A、experience B、cheating C、skills D、training 23. Liverpool and Brazilian streets are two geographic terms used to illustrate______. A、where soccer players get heir way B、how neighborhood affects a soccer player’s success C、why they can produce the best soccer teams D、what a poor, crowded area will provided a future soccer player with 24. in the last paragraph the statement “…but only one became Pele” indicate that______. A、Pele is the greatest soccer player B、the greatest players are born with some unique quality C、Pele’s birthplace sets him apart from all the others D、the success of a soccer player has everything to do with the family background 25. to get the way for a great player, a series of factors are directly mentioned, except _______. A、age and birth B、family and neighborhood C、training and practice D、personality and character ACDBD
Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. It is, everyone agrees, a huge task that the child performs when he learns to speak, and the fact that he does so in so short a period of time challenges explanation. Language and learning begins with listening. Individual children vary greatly in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and late starters are often long listeners. Most children will “obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word obey is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gestures and by making questioning noises. Any attempt to trace the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that the during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves out as particularly indicative of delight, distress, sociability, and so on. But since these can not be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new sounds to their repertoire(能发出的全部声音).this self-imitation leads to deliberate (有意识的)imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. 26. By“……challenges explanation”(line 2, Para 1) the author means that____
- no explanation necessary for such an obvious phenomenon
- no explanation has been made up to now
- it’s no easy job to provide an adequate explanation
- it’s high time that an explanation was provided
27. The third paragraph is mainly about______
- the development of babies’ early forms of language
- the difficulties of babies in learning to speak
- babies’ strong desire to communicate
- babies’ intention to communicate
28. The author’s purpose in writing the second paragraph is to show that children______
- usually obey without asking questions
- are passive in the process of learning to speak
- are born cooperative
- learn to speak by listening
29. From the passage we learn that________
- early starters can learn to speak within only six months
- children show a strong desire to communicate by making noises
- imitation plays an important role in learning to speak
- children have various difficulties in learning to speak
30. The best title for this passage would be_____
- how babies learned to speak
- early forms of speech
- a huge task for children
- noise making and language learning

Passage Three Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.
Since the earliest times, trees have always been very useful and important to man who made use of them in many ways. Even today trees continue to serve man in so many ways. Trees provide man with fruits and building materials in the form of wood. Without trees it would be impossible to build houses, boats and even bridges. Furniture such as tables, chairs and beds is made of wood. In the tropics(热带地区)where it is very hot throughout the year, trees protect man from the terrible heat. They are also useful in preventing good and rich top soil from being washed away during heavy rains which are so common in the tropics. If there were no trees of vegetation(植被)of some kind to hold back the soil with their roots, heavy rain would wash away the rich surface soil that is so important and necessary to agriculture. The result is that the land becomes a desert. There are so many desert areas in the world. A long time ago these desert areas must have been very fertile(肥沃的)areas, but since our ancestors(祖先)in the distant past did not have enough knowledge about science of nature, they cut down all the trees in the areas where they lived and never planted new ones. By and by, the rich surface soil was blown and washed away by strong winds and heavy rains. In the end the lands were turned into useless deserts where nothing could grow.
31. “Rich top soil” in Line 2, Paragraph 2 means ______ and is ________.
- Useless soil……of no use for agriculture
- Soil on the surface of the earth……good for agriculture
- Soil found under the earth……found under the roots of trees
- Dry soil in desert areas……bad for agriculture
32. According to the passage, some desert areas were once ______.
- Fertile lands

- Heavy rains would clean the tropics
- The rich top soil couldn’t be held back
- The balance of nature is unimportant to man
34. From this passage, we know that ______. A、man can do nothing to keep the balance of nature B、man may take no notice of the balance of nature C、man must do his best to keep the balance of nature D、man must have knowledge of science of nature 35. the best title of this passage is _______.
- The Uses and Importance of Trees
- The Importance of Top Soil
- How Are Rich Lands Turned into Deserts

When your parents advise you to “get an education” in order to raise your income, they only tell you half the truth. What they really mean is to get just education to provide the manpower for your society, but not so much what you prove an in embarrassment to your society. Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you will be occupationally dead unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison, and you can successfully drop out in grade school. Get a college degree, if possible. With a B.A., you are on the launching pad. But now you how to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master’s degree, make sure it is an MBA, and is famous. Law of diminishing returns begins to take effect. Do you know, for instance, that long-haul truck drivers earn more per year than full professors?yes, the average 1977 salary for those trucktoers was $24,000. while the full professors managed to earn just $23,030. A ph. D. is the highestto degree you can get. Except for a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes, if you pursue such a degree in any other field, you will face a dim future. there are more Ph.D.s an umemployed or underemployed in this country wthan any part of the world. If you become a doctor of philosophy in English or history or anthropology or political science or language or----worst of all---in philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducatoted for where our national demands. Not for our needs, mind you, but for our demands. Thousands of Ph.D.s are selling shoes, driving carsto, waiting on table, and endless filling out applications month after month. Threy may also take a job in some high school or backwater college that pays much less than the janitor earns. You can equate the level of income with the level of education only so far. Far enough, that is,to make you useful to the gross national product, but not so far that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.
21. according to the writer, what the society expects of by education is turn our people who _________. A. will not be a disgrace to society B. will become loyal citizens C. can take care of themselves
- can meet the nation’s demands as the source of manpower
22. many Ph.D.s are out of job because____. A. they are improperly educated B. they are of little commercial value to their society C. there are fewer jobs in high schools
- they prefer easier jobs that make more money
23. the nation is only interested in people ______. A. with diplomasto B. who specialize in physics and chemistry C. who are valuable to the gross national product D. both B. and C.
24. which Of the following is not true? A. Bernard Shaw didn’t finish high schools, nor did Edison B. one must think carefully before pursuing a master’s degree C. the higher your education level, the more money in will earn D.if you are too well-toeducated, you’ll be overeducated for society’s demands
25. the writer’s sees education as _____. A. a means of providing job security and financial security and a means of meeting the country’s demand for technical workers B. a way to broaden wise horizons C. more important than finding a job
- an opportunity that everyone should have

Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage. Social change is more likely to occur in societies where there is a mixture of different kinds of people than in societies where people are similar in many ways. the simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is you usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customery and undisputed. Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposits; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements. Furthermoreto, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than with sharp dichotomies(一分为二). This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts.
26. the passage mainly discusses________. A. two different societies B. the necessity of social change C. certain factors that determine the ease with which social changes occur D. certain factors that promote social change 27. ___________is one of the factors that tend to promote social change. A. joint interest B. advanced technology C. less emotional people D. different points of view 28. that expression “greater tolerance”(paragraph 1) refers to _________.
- greater willingness to accept social change
- Qicker adaptation to changing circumstances
- more respect for different beliefs and behavior
- greater readiness to agree to different opinions and ideas
29. according to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
- social change tends to meet with more difficulty in basic and a motional aspects of society
- disagreement with and argument about conditions tens to slow down social change
- social change is more likely to occur in the material aspects of society
- social change is less likely to occur in what people learned when they were young
30. social change is less likely to occur in a society where people are quite similar in many ways because__________.
- people there have got so accustomed to their conditions that they seldom think it necessary to change
- people there have identical needs that can be satisfied without much difficulty
- people there are easy to please
- people there are less disputatious
CDCBA Passage Three Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. in reading the world’s great literature on human literature and personal success, I’ve found that to launch ourselves into a life of true success we need to satisfy one basic condition: pursue our vision with stubborn(顽强的) and consistency. The biggest difference between people who succeed and those who don’t is not usually talent but persistence. On my way to work one morning, I met Rudy Ruettiger, who is now a motivational speaker. He has grown up in Joliet, listening to stories about Notre Dame and dreaming of one day playing football there. Friends told him he wasn’t a good enough student to be admitted. So he gave up his dream and when to work in a power plant. Then a friend was killed in an accident at work, shocked, Rudy suddenly realized that life is too short not to pursue your dreams. In 1972, at the age of 23, he enrolled at Holy Cross Junior college in south bend, Ind. He got good enough grads to transfer to Notre Dame, where he finally made the football team as a member of the “scout team”, the players who help the team prepare for games. Rudy was living his dream, almost. But he wasn’t allowed to suit up for the games themselves. The next year, after Rudy requested it, the coach told Rudy he could put on his uniform for the season’s final game. And there he sat, on the Notre Dame bench during the game. A student started shouting,” we want Rudy!” Soon others joined in. finally, at as the age of 27, with 27 seconds left to play, Rudy Ruettiger was sent onto the field-----and made the final tackle(阻截).so his team won the game. When I met Rudy seventeen years later, it was in the parking lot outside Notre Dame Stadium, where a camera crew was filming scenes for Rudy, a motion picture about his life. His story illustrates that there’s no limit to wear your dream can take you. 31. The writer believes that the key to achieving success is_______
